NY Times Select Deathwatch

Explanation of TimesSelect icon

The publishers of the New York Times, in their infinite wisdom, launched the TimesSelect service on Monday, September 19th 2005. The main benefit of this service (as near as I can tell) is the ability to read the NYT's OpEd columnists on line. They have priced access to the service at $7.95 per month or $49.95 per year.

Mickey Kaus, among others, have expressed their doubts about the willingness of many people to pay $50 a year to read the likes of Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman.

My bet is that there are relatively few folks who want to pay this sort of money for the type of opinion they can read for free elsewhere. I suspect that this move will prove to be very unpopular among the columnists themselves, as their readership (and therefore influence) declines, at least among the blogosphere.

I give it six months before they throw in the towel.

Update

September 19, 2007: Well, they finally pulled the plug on TimesSelect after 730 days. Read all about it.
